Cereal Leaf Beetle Adults Now Active, May 31 2022Click here to print alert
Cereal Leaf Beetle is an occasional pest of spring and winter wheat in Montana. At high populations it can cause severe damage to the leaves of wheat plants during May and June. While in Madison County I observed some adult activity but no larvae yet. This may be an isolated occurrence. A link to the Cereal Leaf Beetle MontGuide provides further information: https://store.msuextension.org/publications/AgandNaturalResources/MT201604AG.pdf
Another good resource is the High Plains IPM Guide: http://wiki.bugwood.org/HPIPM:Cereal_Leaf_Beetle
Figures from the MontGuide are included in this AgAlert to help recognize this pest. In Figure 3 note the typical adult chewing damage, you may also see adult beetles around the wheat seedlings, note the characteristic red thorax, red legs and black abdomen.
