“Know Your State and County”

These sounds words of advice from The Extension Worker’s Code (Talbert, 1922), an Extension publication from what was then the Kansas State Agricultural College, ring true to this day. A well-worn copy of this booklet has graced the desks of many Extension Agents here and continues to guide our service to the people of Mineral County and the State of Montana. Montana State University administrators, deans, faculty members, and student leaders visited Mineral County in June as part of the President’s Tour, an annual bus tour of a specific region of Montana begun eight years ago by MSU President, Dr. Waded Cruzado. The annual summer tour puts the president and other MSU leaders face-to-face with the Montana communities served by the university’s land-grant mission to establish a deeper understanding of the state and its people. Mineral County was proud to host a brief stop along the arduous tour route and an opportunity to share local thoughts, needs, and more about Mineral County than what most people ever learn driving by on the Interstate. That sense of local knowledge and community mirrors the sagely counsel from Talbert nearly 100 years ago and it is embraced by the President of MSU and the local agents here in the county. Extension programs and expertise continue serving ever increasing and diverse needs and clientele. Public support for MSU Extension remains high and it is helpful that every dollar of county support for Extension in Mineral County leverages three times as much support from federal and state partners to meet the needs of our local citizens.
