Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day 2019

Jim Schumacher Livestock Day The annual Jim Schumacher memorial livestock day was well attended with over twenty-five community livestock producers benefitting from the collaborative efforts of Phillips county extension and local veterinary care providers. Attendees heard speakers discuss a variety of topics that pertain to and can impact their operations. There were five speakers covering livestock topic related to Johne’s disease, cattle production efficiency, Veterinary Feed Directive, electronic identification and radio frequency livestock tags, and Chronic Wasting disease in wildlife. Dr. Thomsen with Merck Animal Health who presented on Johne's disease in cattle. Dr. Funston with the University of Nebraska. Part of Dr. Funston’s research has been studying the role environment plays on developing cattle and how it pertains to their future productivity. Dr. Ann Johnson (a Phillips County veterinarian) talked about the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD). Ann Henderson with Allflex demonstrated ways that EID and RFID tags can and will continue to be implemented. Currently RFID tags can be used to monitor cattle health. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was presented by biologist Scott Thompson with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. These topics are extremely important to the local livestock industry which produces enough red meat to feed 330,000 people annually and generated revenues of $32,768,000 in 2016.
